Have you ever explored the possibility of feeding your pet with cabbages?
These veggies are present in many dishes. They also have lots of vitamins present in them.
For your pony, are they a safe option? Keep reading to find out!
What are the essential things to note?
Not all vegetables that are good enough for you are safe for your pet.
Veggies are rich in vitamins and can strengthen your pet’s immunity.
Can you add cabbages to your horse’s diet?
Ideally, your pet’s diet should contain a mix of hay and some feed. Supply water too in sizeable amounts.
Treats are those other ingredients that allow for variety in your horse’s diet.
Veggies like broccoli or other cruciferous plants will not make ideal treats.
They will make your pet gassy during digestion. People get gassy after eating cabbages too.
However, they are less likely to affect you when properly cooked.
Horses, on the other hand, react to cabbages differently.
Cabbages are a terrible option for your horse too.
Horses are prone to having gas-related colic, which can cause a lot of harm to your pet.
It’s why most nutritionists do not recommend cabbages for horses.
Not every pet owner feels this way. Some think that horses can get away with eating cabbages.
They have watched their ponies enjoy it, however, only in the right quantities.
These nutritionists recommend feeding only a handful of leaves. This amount is about two to five ounces in weight.
However, the research on this remains incomplete, and there are more cons than pros.
It is why we recommended other options as treats for your horse.
However, if you still want to feed your pet with cabbages, do it in bits.
Give your pony small quantities of this veggie first. Then, increase this amount only when your pet responds well to it.
How do you feed your pet with veggies?
Wash vegetables thoroughly before giving them to your horse.
Being on the larger side will not stop your horse from falling sick.
This fact is true, especially if your horse has a germ or bacterial infection.
So, ensure that you wash these veggies thoroughly like you’ll be eating them yourself.
Chop the cabbages into small sizes.
It will make it more comfortable for your pet to swallow.
Horses cannot vomit, so doing this will prevent your pony from choking.
It will prevent you from having to contact a vet for emergency operations too.
Vegetables like carrots, pumpkin, and celery are perfect as treats for your pet. Horses love how they taste.
They are also quite nutritious and contain lots of vitamins. Corn is also a useful ingredient and is a rich source of starch.
You can serve corn along with other grains to make a balanced diet too.
Avocados cause various side-effects on ponies.
They are not suitable for horses, so are onions, peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes.
We do not recommend these veggies because they are harmful to your horse’s health.
Brussels sprout is also not ideal for horses for the same reason why cabbages are to be avoided for your pony.
